The Pink Warrior™ Story

Kelly Gatzke and Fiona McGarry-Gatzke are the inspiration, motivation and driving force behind the Pink Warrior™ Movement. They are fiercely and personally committed to their goal of raising funds and awareness for cancer research.

This young couple has faced major medical challenges in their lives but Kelly described the day that he was told that his wife had cancer as the day that their lives changed forever. He speaks of how heartbreaking it was see the look on his wife’s face that somehow she felt she had let him down by not being able to have children now. He tried to put her fears to rest as he stood bravely by her and did everything that he could think of to comfort and protect her. He cooled her brow when she vomited for hours on end after her first chemotherapy, rubbed her arms and legs when the pain was almost unbearable for her and has prayed with her on the many steps along the years of surgeries, treatments, tests, more cancer scares and then more surgeries.

Kelly was inspired by Fiona’s battle and vowed to do all that he could to help raise funds to find a cure - so the idea of Pink Warrior™ was born. Like most families they believe in doing what they can to help where needed – they believe there is a great need for more and better cancer research for all types of cancer and are tired of losing friends to this disease. So in 2006 they created a business called Pink Warrior™ and their mission has grown and expanded each year.

In 2006 they launched a retail website now called Pink Warrior™.com, where the focus is to provide a venue where you can make a difference simply by redirecting some of your shopping dollars. Fiona designs and makes the jewellery as part of her therapy for the nerve damage caused by the chemotherapy. She uses the beautiful Swarovski Crystals plus a wide variety of colours and mixture of beads, as there are many types of women and men who are affected by cancer. They have expanded their business to include many apparel, inspirational items and events.

In 2008 they launched first Pink Warrior™ Classic Golf Tournament for Cancer Research where they focus on fun and fundraising. This unique event draws players, sponsors and spectators from across the prairies. Each year a new celebrity entertains and delights the crowd but the true heroes are the fundraisers who work all year to compete for the highest glory as Top Fundraiser. The daylong event takes the participants through a myriad of emotions leaving them asking for more and ready to return the next year.

At the time of writing this Kelly and Fiona are busy working with fundraisers on more and interesting new events and projects in the goal to raise more funds and awareness each year. As they continue their mission they meet more survivors and hear their stories making them even more eager to make a bigger difference.

This couple puts this mission above all. They do not draw a salary and work with the help of volunteers, covering administration costs themselves rather than allow it to take from the cause. Putting their hearts and their funds into doing whatever is needed so that more money makes it into the hands of researchers.

They believe that their dreams and their love really can move mountains and give hope, courage and strength to others. As people support and join the Pink Warrior™ Movement they know that together they will fund a cure for cancer.
